How to Prepare for a HALO Laser Treatment

Sun damage, the natural aging process, and acne are among the factors that can prevent skin from looking its best. Skin may become discolored, uneven, or scarred, causing it to lose its natural radiance and glow. Traditional laser treatments have long been effective in restoring and rejuvenating the skin to achieve a radiant, more youthful complexion. However, new cosmetic technology has introduced a more advanced method of laser skin resurfacing called HALO. This cosmetic advancement reduces the number of required treatments, shortens the recovery time, and produces more dramatic results.

What Is the HALO Laser?

The HALO laser, a hybrid fractionated laser, is the latest in skin resurfacing technology. It is the first adjustable laser of its kind, combining two wavelengths, ablative and non-ablative, to treat skin imperfections. The laser simultaneously delivers both wavelengths to the areas of the skin that require treatment on multiple layers.Hybrid fractional lasers were developed to shorten the downtime following procedures and reduce the risk of side effects.

How Does the HALO Laser Treatment Work?

The HALO laser combines the powers of the ablative and non-ablative lasers to target skin imperfections, improve tone and texture and reveal a more youthful-looking surface. The ablative laser treats the skin’s outermost layer, or epidermis, removing dead and damaged skin to encourage skin renewal. The non-ablative laser delivers heat deeper into the dermis. The heating of the dermis causes microscopic injuries to the cells. This stimulates collagen production – a protein that contributes to skin structure and texture.Together, the wavelengths encourage healthy, glowing skin.

What Skin Concerns Can HALO Treat?

HALO lasers can address several common skin concerns, including:

  • Wrinkles and fine lines
  • Dark spots
  • Acne scars
  • Enlarged pores
  • Hyperpigmentation

How Should Clients Prepare for Treatment?

It is essential to consult with a skin practitioner prior to having a HALO session to determine if you area good candidate. Below are other important steps to take in preparation for treatment.

  • Discontinue using any products containing active ingredients like retinol, salicylic acid, glycolic acid, alpha hydroxy acids and benzoyl peroxide at least two weeks before treatment.
  • Avoid sun exposure and tanning beds for two weeks before and 4 weeks after treatment.
  • Avoid waxing or using any hair removal creams on the treatment area.
  • Forego wearing makeup on the day of the procedure.
  • Individuals prone to cold sores may be prescribed anti-viral medication to reduce the risk of outbreak and contamination of treated areas.

What Can Clients Expect during Treatment?

Each HALO provider approaches treatment sessions differently. Individual experiences also vary depending on factors like the nature of the treatment, skin type, the condition being addressed, and the client’s goals and pain threshold.

In a typical session, a topical anesthetic is applied to the skin 30 minutes before the procedure to numb the area. This is to reduce any discomfort during the process. Once the anesthetic has taken effect, the area is mapped to ensure that the skin is evenly treated. Clients are given protective eyewear, after which the provider begins treatment. Clients experience a warm, prickly sensation as the HALO device moves across the skin. The device cools the warmed area during treatment to lessen discomfort. Treatments last between 30 minutes and one hour.

What Should Clients Expect after Treatment?

Redness and swelling generally last 1-3 days.  Pinpoint bleeding can occur, and you may also feel a warm, prickly sensation lasting up to a day. The treated area will appear bronzed, with small brown spots and crusting across the surface. Skin will also feel dry and itchy. Do not scratch, as scratching will cause scarring and discolouration. During this time, the skin slowly regenerates as it sheds old layers and reveals a fresh, renewed surface. This process takes 3-7 days.

The recovery time and result of your procedure depend on, among other things, your skin type and the aggressiveness of the treatment you select. The more aggressive the treatment, the longer the recovery time and the more dramatic the results. Your skin’s tone and texture will improve as time elapses and new collagen is stimulated.
