Why We Say No to RF Micro-Needling at SKN

And Yes to Skin That Ages Beautifully

You may have recently seen Instagram videos of plastic surgeons speaking out about the downsides of RF Micro-Needling and other heat-based devices like Morpheus8, Ultherapy, and Thermage. This conversation is long overdue — and honestly, it’s something we’ve felt intuitively and clinically at SKN for over a decade.

What’s reassuring is that the medical community is now echoing what we’ve always believed: traditional Micro-Needling — without radiofrequency — is one of the most powerful, skin-respecting treatments available for healthy aging.

Micro-Needling: Where It Began (and Why It Matters)

Micro-Needling was originally developed as a safe alternative to laser resurfacing, particularly for higher Fitzpatrick skin types, because it rarely caused post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Its brilliance lies in its simplicity:

  • It stimulates the skin’s natural collagen and growth factor production
  • It works with the skin’s biology, not against it
  • It respects the integrity of the skin barrier and dermal layer

This is why Micro-Needling became a cornerstone treatment — and why SKN helped put it on the map in Vancouver nearly 15 years ago.

Today, Micro-Needling remains one of our most trusted and transformative treatments, elevated even further by advanced boosters that allow potent exosomes, growth factors, and regenerative nutrients to penetrate deeply into the skin.

Where RF Micro-Needling Goes Wrong

As Micro-Needling gained popularity, many device manufacturers combined it with radiofrequency (heat) in an attempt to intensify results. This reflects a broader industry trend: pushing the skin harder, deeper, and more aggressively in the name of “more.”

But more is not always better.

Heat-based Micro-Needling introduces thermal injury beneath the skin, and when energy levels, depth, or technique are misjudged, it can impact structures that should never be compromised — including subcutaneous fat, which is essential for youthful volume and facial architecture.

Loss of volume is not rejuvenation. It is the opposite of long-term skin health.

What the Medical Community Is Now Acknowledging

In October 2025, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a safety communication regarding serious complications reported with certain uses of RF Micro-Needling devices, including:

  • Burns
  • Scarring
  • Fat loss and contour irregularities
  • Nerve damage

Radiofrequency energy generates heat below the skin’s surface, and when delivered too aggressively or without sufficient expertise, it can affect deeper tissues — including fat, nerves, and vascular structures. This aligns with the warnings now being shared publicly by plastic surgeons and dermatologic experts.

The SKN Philosophy: Skin First. Always.

At SKN, we believe in offering Micro-Needling in its purest and safest form — rooted in clinical evidence and deep respect for the skin’s natural intelligence.

Our approach prioritizes:

  • Preserving subcutaneous fat and facial volume
  • Supporting collagen without chronic inflammation
  • Protecting the skin barrier and long-term resilience
  • Encouraging regeneration rather than injury-repair cycles

The industry is finally recognizing what we’ve seen for years: aggressive resurfacing, excessive heat, over-stimulating actives, and repeated irritation can break down collagen, increase sensitivity, and compromise skin longevity.

Healthy, youthful skin is not forced — it’s supported.
